RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The Palestinian foreign minister says the Obama administration told Palestinian leaders to expect little help with their statehood bid during the U.S. presidential campaign.
But Riad Malki said Friday the administration also held out the promise of serious U.S. mediation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict if Barack Obama is re-elected president.
Malki says in an interview that Palestinian leaders are aware of the constraints of domestic U.S. politics and will act responsibly, suggesting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not do anything that might irrevocably damage his ties with Washington.
However, Malki says the Palestinians are keeping their options open, including those opposed by the U.S., such as reviving a bid to win U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine.
