Abdominal Training Tips From Bodybuilding Pros - Business ...

The first is personal determination. How fired is the zeal to achieve the bodybuilding objectives are you? How much are you willing and ready to endure in the course of training? To what extents are you ready and willing to commit to the achievement of the identified objectives? How much sacrifices are you ready and willing to make for the attainment of your bodybuilding goals? What can make you drop out of the bodybuilding program? Answering these questions will help you grade your level of determination.

You hear that phrase chucked around a lot because it?s true. Bad news is that food is expensive, especially high protein foods. Anyone seriously into training will find they are spending far more on foods than any supplements yet most never think about how much they?re really spending and would think nothing of picking up the odd packaged meal from their local supermarket for lunch most days.

Not all bodybuilding boards are the similar, it is genuinely important to choose the suitable spot and very usually the busiest and a lot more well-known bodybuilding discussion boards aren?t the ideal at all. They are likely to be complete of intelligent ass youngsters, ?holier than thou? self appointed gurus, steroid dealers/scammers and did I point out egos heaps of huge fragile egos.

After running a fitness site and bodybuilding forum, I see a lot of confused individuals who ask this very question below about the 5-6 meal deal. They have heard about it and want to do it but when it comes to counting calories, they are not willing to measure each grain of rice.

The 40% more weight or resistance placed upon a targeted muscle increases your training intensity, or places a greater demand on the muscle. Thus, providing the optimal stimulus for body building muscle growth, and development.

Today, Thai markets are flooded with bodybuilding supplements under the most renowned brands in the world. You can select your options from online sources as well, for the sheer convenience of it and for exploring the immense variety at your disposal. You can come across hundreds of brands to choose from. However, it is always advisable to check on the compositions and then consult a medical practitioner or a trainer before subjecting yourself to any of these.

In body building, in order for the muscle development process to occur, there needs to be a high intensity stimulus placed upon the musculature system. When your muscles are overloaded in force greater than at a previous time, the human body requires that particular muscle group to hypertrophy, or increase larger. Thus, there is an rise in muscle strength, and size. The muscle system adapts to any added stress placed upon it.

You can get a great deal of sites, blogs and forum on this. I?ve been getting into methods to flourish my muscle mass and lose the fat I?ve.

Remote-Controlled Roaches to the Rescue? [Video]

Researchers create cyborg insects that may one day save earthquake victims

The robot in WALL-E may have befriended a cockroach, but humans are more likely to react with revulsion than joy at the sight of one. Would you feel differently, however, if you were trapped in a collapsed building or mine, and rescuers had sent a cockroach in to find you? A team of researchers says it can harness the cockroach's uncanny survivability in ways that might someday benefit humanity.

The trick is to fire wireless signals at a roach's antennae and other sensory organs to guide it to a desired destination, says Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor in North Carolina State University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Bozkurt, working with doctoral candidate Tahmid Latif, communicated with Madagascar hissing cockroaches by saddling them with electrical devices that look like backpacks. Each insect backpack included a thin, rigid, printed circuit board with a microcontroller, a wireless signal receiver, miniature plugs for connecting stimulation electrodes and a lithium-ion polymer battery.

"What we do is similar to riding a horse," Bozkurt says. "[The] cockroach walks naturally, and we simulate barriers by sending pulses to its antenna. They use their antenna as touch sensors, so stimulation on one side directs these insects towards the opposite direction." Bozkurt and Latif presented their research last month at the 34th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society in San Diego, Calif.

Bozkurt and Latif attached the backpacks to the roaches using magnets that they glued to the insects' backs. They used tiny stainless steel electrodes to connect the backpack's circuit board to the roach's antennae and fixed them in place with medical-grade epoxy, according to Bozkurt. The researchers then wirelessly sent electrical impulses to the backpack's receiver, which stimulated either the left or right antenna.

The greater the electrical charge, the more sharply the roaches changed direction. The researchers say they programmed the microcontroller with an algorithm to monitor the amount of voltage induced into the roach's neural tissue in order to keep from damaging that tissue and making it unresponsive to stimulation pulses.

The researchers see remote-control cockroaches as an alternative to small-scale robots. Designing robots at that scale is very challenging and cockroaches are experts at navigating hostile environments, according to Bozkurt. "They come with biological autonomy to help them survive and this, if carefully controlled, helps them to respond to uncertain and dynamic conditions of certain scenarios such as searching for survivors after an earthquake," he says. Bozkurt and Latif's next step is to miniaturize the backpack even further and gain more precise control of movement.

Coca-Cola's latest drink: No can. No bottle. Flavor drops.

Coca-Cola to introduce Dasani fruity flavor drops. Coca-Cola sees huge potential. Next flavor drops: tea?

The world's largest beverage company is introducing its?Dasani?Drops in coming weeks, which can be squeezed into water for some on-the-spot fruity flavor. And Coca-Cola is betting that there's big potential for growth.

"I think there's an opportunity beyond just flavored waters," said John Roddey, vice president of Coca-Cola's water, tea and coffee business in North America.

Although there are no set plans yet, Roddey says the next logical category for liquid drops would be tea. That's because drinks with higher sugar content are harder to turn into a liquid concentrate.

The Coca-Cola Co. isn't the first to come out with flavor drops. The category was pioneered by Kraft Food Inc.'s MiO, which was introduced in March of last year and has quickly spawned copycats, including by supermarkets that sell store-brand versions.

The drops are popular because they come in small, portable containers that can be easily tucked into a purse or even back pocket. And unlike powdered drink packets, people can decide how much or little they want to squirt into their water. A small bottle can also have more than two dozen servings, meaning people save money they'd spend on bottled teas or enhanced waters.

As with Kraft's MiO drinks,?Dasani?Drops use artificial sweeteners and have zero calories. That could be a concern for consumers who don't like artificial sweeteners, which often have a strong aftertaste.

Now Coca-Cola is preparing to leverage its scale to stake a claim in the category. Roddey says the plan is to make?Dasani?Drops available wherever its?Dasani?bottled water is sold, including on supermarket shelves, in checkout aisles or in the refrigerated sections in convenience stores.

"We're looking to make this as broad as we can," he said.

Dasani?Drops, which will cost about $4, will start hitting shelves in early October. The company is starting with four flavors, but is already planning to introduce additional flavors next year. Each bottle has about 32 servings.

Without mentioning Kraft's MiO by name, Roddey said Coca-Cola saw the early success other brands had and realized the category had huge potential.

Kraft has said that MiO sales through the first half of the year have more than doubled to more than $100 million. The name means "mine" in Italian, suggesting users can make drinks however they like.

For a beverage giant, however, the introduction of liquid flavor drops is more complicated. Coca-Cola says the drops will boost consumption of water, whether it's tap water or bottled. Ideally, of course, people would use the drops with its?Dasani?water, which already saw sales volume rise 13 percent in the first half of the year, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Overall consumption of bottled water has also been growing, although at a much slower pace than in the early 2000s, according to Beverage Digest, which reported last week that Coca-Cola planned to introduce the drops.

The drops may hurt Coca-Cola's other units, however. The company also makes enhanced waters, such as Vitaminwater Zero.

Romney blasts debt-ceiling deal that Ryan backed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Sunday denounced last year's bipartisan debt-ceiling deal that helped avert an unprecedented U.S. government debt default even though one of its backers was his running mate, Paul Ryan.

Without mentioning Ryan by name, Romney called the agreement between the White House and top congressional Republicans "a big mistake," citing potential big defense spending cuts that could come as part of the deal.

Lawmakers reached an 11th-hour deal in August 2011 after a huge showdown, agreeing on nearly $1 trillion in federal spending cuts over 10 years with the promise to impose another $1.2 trillion to reduce budget deficits. The deal was coupled with an increase in the Treasury Department's borrowing authority, as it had bumped up against a legal limit.

As head of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, Ryan backed last year's deal.

"I thought it was a mistake on the part of the White House to propose it (and) I think it was a mistake for Republicans to go along with it," Romney said of the deal.

"I want to maintain defense spending at the current level of the GDP," Romney told NBC's "Meet the Press" in a pre-recorded interview that aired on Sunday. "This sequestration idea of the White House, which is cutting our defense, I think is an extraordinary miscalculation."

Unless an agreement is reached by year's end to implement the same amount in deficit reduction, automatic spending cuts - known as "sequestration" - of $1.2 trillion over 10 years, with a big portion in defense spending, would begin January 2.

So far, Democrats and Republicans have been unable to do so, amid warnings that the possible automatic spending cuts could help push the nation back into a recession.

Ryan, appearing on CBS's "Face the Nation," said he supported the 2011 deal in a bid to find needed "common ground" with Obama and other Democrats. Ryan said Republicans have since proposed ways to reduce "wasteful Washington spending" and avert $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts.

Ryan said that "President Obama has done nothing" to help reach an agreement to reduce spending while also protecting the economy. The sluggish U.S. economy is the central issue ahead of the November 6 elections.

'MORE THAN HAPPY'

Obama, in a pre-recorded interview aired on Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," said, "I'm more than happy to work with Republicans" to cut such a deal.

But he repeated his insistence that deficit reduction include revenue increases as well as spending cuts. "We can make sure that we cut two-and-a-half dollars for every dollar of increased revenue," Obama said. Republicans have opposed any increased revenue from tax hikes, helping create a stalemate.

Romney and Ryan blasted Obama for failing to meet a deadline last week, set by a new law, to explain how he would begin implementing the automatic cuts.

"He has violated the law that he, in fact, signed," Romney said. "The American people need to understand how it is that our defense is going to be so badly cut."

Ryan, appearing on ABC's "This Week" program, denied that Romney's proposal to cut taxes and eliminate yet-to-be-identified tax loopholes amounts to a "secret plan."

"No, no, no, no. What we don't want is a secret plan," Ryan said, explaining that the details are not being kept under cover but instead have not yet been worked out. "The best way to do this is to show the framework, show the outlines of these plans, and then to work with Congress to do this," Ryan added.

Ryan suggested that eliminating tax loopholes would hit higher income people harder.

Former President Bill Clinton told last week's Democratic presidential convention that Romney's plan to reduce taxes by $5 trillion would require the government to cut programs that benefit middle-class families and poor children.

"Those claims have been pretty discredited," Ryan said, pointing to analyses he said show the tax plan would work.

"We think the secret to economic growth is lower tax rates for families and successful small businesses by plugging loopholes," Ryan said.

In his "Meet the Press" interview, Romney followed up on Ryan's comments on Friday that another round of monetary stimulus from the U.S. Federal Reserve would be a bad idea. Romney also forecast high inflation "down the road."

"Well, I don't think that easing monetary policy is going to make a significant difference in the job market right now. I think what the nation needs is a change in fiscal policy, a different structure to our economic positions," Romney said.

The comments by Romney and Ryan come ahead of the Fed's September 12-13 meeting at which some economists think the policymakers will unveil another round of bond buying to prop up the country's weak economic recovery.

"And of course the stock market does well in part because the indication by the Fed that they're going to print more money, pour more money into the system, says we're likely to have, down the road, high inflation," Romney said.

"And where else are you going to go? If interest rates are going to be near zero, investors have to go somewhere to protect against inflation. And the stock market's the only place to go," Romney added.

Romney already has said he would not reappoint Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to a third term. Bernanke's second four-year term as chairman at the Fed ends January 31, 2014.

China earthquakes prompt massive evacuation

September 8, 2012

BEIJING ? At least 80 people were killed Friday when a pair of earthquakes jolted a mountainous region of southwestern China, triggering landslides, damaging thousands of buildings and forcing thousands of residents from their homes, the official New China News Agency said.

The first quake, a magnitude 5.7, shook the border region of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces at 11:19 a.m. An hour later, the second quake struck, a magnitude 5.6.

The temblors destroyed or damaged 20,000 homes and injured more than 700 people in the largely impoverished, rural area. State media reported that 100,000 people had been evacuated.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao toured the area Saturday to coordinate rescue efforts, state media said.

A local official in hard-hit Yiliang county, in Yunnan province, told the Associated Press that many homes had collapsed.

"The casualty number is still being compiled," said the official, who declined to give his name. "I don't know what [it] was like for the other towns, but my town got hit badly."

Gang Huangfu, the director of Yunnan's seismological bureau, told state media that homes and buildings in the region were not built to withstand the quakes.

Building standards remain a sensitive subject in China's countryside. In 2008, Sichuan province was devastated by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that killed nearly 90,000 people. Shoddy construction in the underdeveloped disaster zone was blamed for the high toll.

The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande

The Distance Between us is the memoir of author Reyna Grande. The book starts in 1980: Reyna is 4 years old and living with parents, her younger brother Carlos and elder sister Mago. It is even then a very difficult economic time in Mexico and like many people the Grande family is living in extreme poverty. Reyna's father?has left?a few years ago, when Reyna was two years old?for El Otro Lado which means The Other Side of the Mexican-American border, to find work. He finds it there and soon Reyna's mother also makes the dangerous border crossing to join him and find work to support the family. It takes eight years before she sees him back, and she only knows him from a photo, the reason why she refers to him as The man behind the glass.

Reyna, Mago and Carlos have to stay with their abusive grandmother while their parents are away. Mago is the eldest of the three childrens so she is kind of a little mother for her younger brother and sister.Their parents come back now and then, but the distance between them and the children is growing bigger, and overall the children don't know their parents in their most important years of growing up, and they only have each other to rely on.

When Reyna is ten years old, and their father, who has problems with alcohol has returned for a longer period, the children themselves are going to make the crossing to the US. Then a whole new world of diffcult challenges opens up to them, as they are illegaly in the United States and don't speak English. But now Reyna has the chance to study, and she becomes the first in her family to graduate from collegeand they get the chance to become legal US residents. Now Reyna Grande is an award winning author,
She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing and Film and Video from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Antioch University. She is a sought-after speaker at middle/high schools, colleges and universities across the nation, and teaches creative writing workshops in Los Angeles. Her first book, Across a Hundred Mountains, came out in 2006, and tells the story of a Mexican teen who makes the dangerous border crossing into the USA. Her second novel, Dancing with Butterflies, came out in 2009.

This is by far one of the most impressing memoirs I have read. Reyna Grande gives a raw and real look in the life of immigrants. This book reflects the struggle they have to face, on both sides of the border: the extreme poverty and hardships in Mexico, of leaving your country and facing a different world with new difficulties and, as an undocumented immigrant, the chance and fear of being sent back. Altough Reyna and her family where poor during this difficult time, they all have so much courage! That was a hidden red line in the book; never give up. It was heartbreaking to read how the immigration and dream for a better life can break?a family apart, and how?a distance can grow between children and their parents.?It is just amazing to read how Reyna has accomplished so many fantastic things just by doing and by not giving up and pulling trough. I think many people can learn from this impressing memoir and take it as a positive example. I highly recommend The Distance Between Us!

Genius Tips To Help You Become Good At Email Marketing

Are your email marketing attempts failing to get the results you would like? Does the concept of email marketing interest you, but leave you unsure of where to start? This is the article for you! The tips that follow will give you some pointers for constructing marketing emails that appeal to a wide variety of customers.

Be certain that anyone you send messages to through email channels has given you permission to do so. If you fail to do this, you will destroy the trust of your existing customers and generate negative word of mouth. You may even be banned by some ISPs and this can severely impact your business in a negative way.

Only send emails that contain useful information; customers will unsubscribe if you bombard them with useless messages. Do not send out repetitive emails or uninteresting ones. Always add something of value like a tip regarding your service, a suggested use for your product, or a special free offer in each message you send out.

One important tip that all email marketers should understand is that you should always keep your branding consistent. People should be able to open your emails and recognize your brand and products right away. Sending mixed email messages that look different from each other makes it harder for your subscribers to remember you.

Do not ever send unsolicited emails to unsuspecting customers. Anyone who receives an email they didn?t ask for will get angry and is likely to report you for spamming them. This practice is terrible for the reputation of your business, and you may even get your IP address blocked by ISPs if they receive complaints about your unsolicited messages.

Always add a link where your email recipients can easily unsubscribe or opt out, if they choose to do so. Although less expensive than other forms of communication, email messages have a price tag. Not only that, blowback and negative attention spammers get are terrible for the company?s business and can ultimately result in black listings or blocks.

Ensure that you get customer permission prior to emailing them. Unsolicited emails can create the risk of spam complaints, as well as unread messages. Not only that, but a lot of people will choose to opt-out, which means they will not get anymore emails from you. You also run the risk of violating your ISP policy if you are called a spammer.

Make sure to create an email list that has organic numbers. Never rent or buy lists. Build up this listing by utilizing any business cards you?ve gotten from industry events. Include forms for your followers to sign up on your site. That way, your list will always be tailored toward boosting your business.

Make sure your email marketing stays consistent with your company branding. It is important that all your emails use the same format, logo and color scheme. By making the emails recognizable, you can take advantage of the good reputation you have already worked hard to develop.

It is very smart to include an opt-in button for people to sign up with you. It may seem like overkill, but by doing this, you can be sure that a person wants to receive your emails and that will make it harder for your email provider to get into trouble.

The technique of email marketing has great potential, but only if properly executed. With the ideas from above, you can now take your email marketing to new heights. You?ll be successful in no time if you use what you?ve learned here!

Legit Paid Surveys - Marijuana for MRSA - Lets Talk About Pot

How Much Can You make? It depends on the survey and the company but on average 3$-10$ there are some surveys that always pay more but usually never pays less. Majority of the survey takers who are getting low payments used search engines when looking for sites to join. Search engines will never give you those high paying sites as a result. You will find pages and pages of results through Google and Yahoo but it will not point you in the right direction, more about Free Printable Papa Murphy Pizza Coupons and Petco Store Coupons. They aren?t going to work. Read on to find out more on Free Printable Papa Murphy Pizza Coupons and Petco Store Coupons.

An excellent home business, surveys do not require much education beyond standard literary skills, nor do they require you to be any one gender, race or to leave your home. They are one way that many people make money. Whether you just want to earn an extra $100 or so per month or earn a full time income, are easy and require no previous experience.

Generic ink cartridges is one thing that can be compared to paid survey websites. This is so because, just like the latter, there are survey websites that are bad besides good one. It?s sad to know that the bad reputation left off by these bad survey websites are attached also to the good ones.

Therefore one needs to have a strong work ethic, the same as in a normal job, to excel in the paid to take surveys business. Take heed, it is a real business and these survey-for-money companies expect results as soon as possible.

Free paid survey is the process of numeric data collection that ensures opinion of the public either about products or companies or anything that is suitable. free paid surveys aims at collecting large samples of data from the relevant customers. In comparison to the free paid online surveys, the manual surveys too k up a whole lot of time and money apart from being very inconvenient.Free paid surveys usually will be in the form of a questionnaire. One has to fill the survey form entirely to get the payment from the online website of the survey takers. It?s real, the amount paid by the online survey website ranges from 1$ for a smaller survey to 30$ for a considerably bigger surveys.

Some of them may levy certain charges for information or lists provided for online paid surveys. Remember that information can be availed for free so there is no need to pay money. The internet is again the best place to help you decide whether the job of a particular survey is correct for you or not. Mind boggling information is available on the internet.

I advice NOT to enlist in the survey databases who ask you a fee for membership. You can find the same market research companies for free. Why pay for the free information?

Company?s fee varies. Some pay panel participants up to hundred dollars to be a member of a research panel. Most of the surveys will pay two to ten dollars and some are most likely pay fifty dollars or more than that.

Yes, participating in free surveys is a bit risky. I recently saved up for a brand new computer to help me out in my online job.

Should I Let Them Cancel My Credit Card? - Simple Finance Blog

Four years ago, I took out a line of credit with a major retailer in order to take advantage of the interest-free financing option on a major purchase. Three and a half years ago, I paid off that credit card and haven?t used it since. Last week, I got a letter in the mail, informing me that the retailer was about to cancel my credit card.

The Details Of The Card

The card doesn?t have a massive credit limit ? just $5,000. I don?t have a clue what the APR is on it, because I only used it once, and when I did, it was under a deal that gave me interest-free financing. If I had to guess, I?d say it?s in the upper teens, but I don?t know for sure. I don?t pay any annual fees on this account, either.

For years, I?ve considered canceling the card myself. After all, I wasn?t using it ? I had no plans to use it ? and didn?t see the point in having it gather dust in my wallet. I?d heard that deciding to cancel a credit card could negatively impact your credit score, but since we weren?t applying for any loans or anything else that would cause someone to pull my credit report, I wasn?t too concerned about it. However, I never got around to canceling it, and had largely forgotten about it until last week?s letter.

The letter informed me that the company would cancel my credit card in 30 days, unless I made a purchase using it during the intervening billing cycle.

The Impact of Canceling a Credit Card

At this point, the idea of having a credit card canceled finally got very real to me. After all, we?re in the middle of selling our house, and when we (eventually) get around to applying for a home loan, I?m going to need my credit score to be in the best possible shape. So, I started researching exactly how a cancellation could impact my credit score.

A basic tutorial on credit scores ? they are determined by five main factors:

  • Credit mix (10%) ? having a variety of types of credit (ie, a car loan, student loans, a credit card) looks better than no variety
  • New credit (10%) ? recently applying for a new line of credit can temporarily drag your credit score down a few points
  • Payment history (35%) ? paying off all your debts on time and in full is the single biggest factor in determining your credit score
  • Length of credit history (15%) ? the longer you hold your accounts (in good standing), the better the impact on your credit score
  • How much you owe (30%) ? this is the relationship between your credit limits and how much of that credit you use; the lower that ratio, the better

When it comes to my choice whether or not to cancel a credit card, I?m mostly concerned with these last two factors. Allowing the company to cancel a long-held credit card could make the length of credit history portion of my score take a hit, while closing the account would reduce my balance-to-limit, or utilization, ratio.

How Big of a Hit Am I Looking At?

This is the big question I?m looking to answer ? and, short of canceling the accounts, I won?t be able to predict exactly how many points I stand to lose on my credit score.

For one thing, I don?t hold a lot of credit cards in the first place. In fact, other than this card, I only have one other credit card in my wallet (it?s a rewards card that I use regularly). Sure, I have other types of debt ? my existing mortgage as well as the remaining balance on my student loans (almost paid off!) ? but not a lot in the credit card department. Losing the $5,000 credit limit from that card could be damning, especially since I?ll be applying for a new home loan in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

Combating The Credit Score Dip

There are ways, however, for me to close the account and keep my credit score where it is. Since I?ve always been able to pay my bills on time, I?d have a good chance of having my other remaining credit card company raise my credit limit if I were to request such an adjustment. I could also ask that company to raise my credit limit in exchange for a higher interest rate; it wouldn?t make a difference to me, since I never incur month-to-month finance charges in the first place. However, since I?m unsure exactly how big of a dip I?d face for closing the first account, I don?t know if bringing the credit limit up on my other card $5,000 would be enough to offset it.

But the bigger question is, does it even matter? My husband and I both currently have FICO scores that are not just in the good range, but in the excellent range ? above 800 (the max, by comparison, is 850). Will taking a hit of five to ten points on my credit score by allowing the retailer to cancel my credit card really hurt my chances of getting the best rates on a home loan that much? Or is it a risk that isn?t worth taking, at least, not right now?

Reader, what do you think? Should I cancel my credit card, or request to keep the account open?

Democrats reinstate ?God-given? and Jerusalem as Israel?s capital to party platform

CHARLOTTE, N.C.?Facing unhappy pro-Israel groups amid a Republican-led outcry, Democrats gathered Wednesday at their presidential nominating convention made 11th-hour changes to the party platform to reinstate a reference to God and a declaration that "undivided" Jerusalem is Israel's capital.

There was widespread booing on the floor of the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led delegates in three voice votes that sounded, at best, equally divided on whether to restore language from the party's 2008 document. Observers said the boos were directed at Villaraigosa's decision to skip a formal ballot and declare the platform amended.

"Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths," the amended document read.

The vote also returned this language to the platform: "We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people,?and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given?potential."

Republicans raised a hue and cry over the Democrats' decision to no longer include the words "God-given" after David Brody of CBN News reported its absence (while also noting that the platform included a section on the importance of faith).

President Barack Obama's position?which echoes that of President George W. Bush?is that the status of Jerusalem is among the so-called "final status" issues that must be resolved by Israel and the Palestinians. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.

An American law declares that Jerusalem is Israel's capital and calls for the United States Embassy there to leave Tel Aviv, where it is now. But it includes a presidential waiver authority, and Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all used that to forestall the change.

"Mitt Romney has consistently stated his belief that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel," said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul. "Now is the time for President Obama to state in unequivocal terms whether or not he believes Jerusalem is Israel's capital."

White House spokesman Jay Carney, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said that "the position on Jerusalem held by this administration, this president, is exactly the same position that presidents and administrations have held since 1967?presidents of both parties, administrations of both parties."

"You certainly didn't hear leaders of the Republican Party during the George W. Bush administration saying that his position of his government that Jerusalem needed to be resolved in final status negotiations between the two parties?Israelis and Palestinians?was 'shameful,'" Carney said. "I didn't hear Mitt Romney say that.?I certainly didn't hear Paul Ryan say that."

Right. Americans heard Barack Obama make that argument in 2008. And then back off when the Palestinians objected. And finally end up where Bush had been throughout his eight years in office.

New study examines how ocean energy impacts life in the deep sea

Thursday, September 6, 2012

A new study of deep-sea species across the globe aims to understand how natural gradients in food and temperature in the dark, frigid waters of the deep sea affect the snails, clams, and other creatures that live there.

Similar studies have been conducted for animals in the shallow oceans, but our understanding of the impact of food and temperature on life in the deep sea ? the Earth's largest and most remote ecosystem ? has been more limited.

The results will help scientists understand what to expect in the deep sea under future climate change, the researchers say. "Our findings indicate that the deep sea, once thought remote and buffered against climatic change, may function quite differently in the future," they write.

All living things need energy in the form of food, heat and light to survive, grow, and reproduce. But for life in the deep sea ? defined as anything beyond 600 feet (200 m) ? energy of any kind is in short supply. Descend more than a few hundred feet beneath the ocean surface, and you'll find a blue-black world of near-freezing temperatures, and little or no light.

Because so little of the sun's light penetrates the surface waters, there are no plants for animals to eat. Most deep-sea animals feed on tiny particles of dead and decaying organic matter drifting down from the sunlit waters above. It is estimated that less than 1% of the food at the surface reaches the ocean's watery depths.

The researchers wanted to know what this energy deprivation means for deep sea habitats across the globe, and for the animals that live there. "How much of the differences that we see across different groups of deep-sea animals in terms of growth, or lifespan, or the number of species, are related to differences in the temperature or amount of food where they occur?" said co-author Craig McClain of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.

To find out, the researchers compiled previously published data for hundreds of deep-sea species across the globe, ranging from crabs and snails to fish and tube worms. The data included parameters like metabolic rate, lifespan, growth, biomass, abundance, size and diversity.

The results suggest that the relative importance of the two basic forms of energy available in the deep sea ? food and warmth ? vary considerably, said co-author Michael Rex at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

Temperature has the biggest impact on parameters at the individual level, such as metabolism and growth rate. For example, deep sea animals living in warmer waters tend to have faster metabolisms.

But for higher-level parameters such as abundance or species diversity, food is more important. Generally speaking, food-rich areas tend to have animals that are bigger, more abundant and more diverse.

The results add to the growing body of evidence that the deep sea isn't isolated from the effects of climate change, the researchers say.

"The oceans are getting warmer and they're producing less food," McClain said. Warmer water in the deep sea due to climate change could mean faster growth and metabolism for the animals that live there, but that could be bad news if the oceans produce less food to support them.

"The news is not good," Rex added. "Changes in temperature and food availability associated with climate change could cause widespread extinction in the deep ocean if environmental changes occur faster than deep-sea organisms can respond by shifting their ranges or adapting to new conditions."

Gorgeous cosmic 'superbubble' observed by x-ray space telescope

Exploding stars carve out gas cavities called superbubbles in a nearby dwarf galaxy, as shown in a new photo from the Chandra space telescope.

This photo reveals a superbubble in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way, that lies roughly 160,000 light-years away from Earth.

Chandra's X-ray observations are shown here in blue light, which represents hot regions. The red light in the photo is from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, which sees infrared light from areas containing dust and cooler gas. Meanwhile, optical light is shown here in yellow in observations from the 2.2-meter Max-Planck-ESO telescope in Chile, which sees ultraviolet radiation from hot, young stars.

Combining all these wavelengths, this composite picture helps give astronomers a fuller understanding of this dynamic region. Many of the bright stars belong to the star cluster NGC 1929, which is embedded in the nebula N44, inside the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Superbubbles are formed when massive stars reach the ends of their lives, exploding in powerful bursts called supernovas that send out shockwaves through space. These shockwaves and winds push gas outward to carve out huge cavities in space.

However, many of the details of how this works remain a mystery. Some superbubbles, including the one in N44, release more X-ray light than current theories suggest they should. This new photo helps astronomers distinguish between the different sources of X-ray emission in this region to try to account for the light they observe.

Major advances in understanding the regulation and organization of the human genome

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? The National Human Genome Research Institute today announced the results of a five-year international study of the regulation and organization of the human genome. The project is named ENCODE, which stands for the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements. In conjunction with the release of those results, the Journal of Biological Chemistry has published a series of reviews that focus on several aspects of the findings.

"The ENCODE project not only generated an enormous body of data about our genome, but it also analyzed many issues to better understand how the genome functions in different types of cells. These insights from integrative analyses are really stories about how molecular machines interact with each other and work on DNA to produce the proteins and RNAs needed for each cell to function within our bodies," explains Ross Hardison of Pennsylvania State University, one of the JBC authors.

Hardison continued: "The Journal of Biological Chemistry recognized that the results from the ENCODE project also would catalyze much new research from biochemists and molecular biologists around the world. Hence, the journal commissioned these articles not only to communicate the insights from the papers now being published but also to stimulate more research in the broader community."

The human genome consists of about 3 billion DNA base pairs, but only a small percentage of DNA actually codes for proteins. The roles and functions of the remaining genetic information were unclear to scientists and even referred to as "junk DNA." But the results of the ENCODE project is filling this knowledge gap. The findings revealed that more than 80 percent of the human genome is associated with biological function.

The study showed in a comprehensive way that proteins switch genes on and off regularly -- and can do so at distances far from the genes they regulate -- and it determined sites on chromosomes that interact, the locations where chemical modifications to DNA can influence gene expression, and how the functional forms of RNA can regulate the expression of genetic information.

The results establish the ways in which genetic information is controlled and expressed in specific cell types and distinguish particular regulatory regions that may contribute to diseases.

"The deeper knowledge of gene regulation coming from the ENCODE project will have a positive impact on medical science," Hardison emphasizes. For example, recent genetic studies have revealed many genomic locations that can affect a person's susceptibility to common diseases. The ENCODE data show that many of these regions are involved in gene regulation, and the data provide hypotheses for how variations in these regions can affect disease susceptibility, adds Hardison.

The effort behind the ENCODE project was extraordinary. More than 440 scientists in 32 labs in United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Singapore and Japan performed more than 1,600 sets of experiments on 147 types of tissue. The results were published today in one main integrative paper and five other papers in the journal Nature, 18 papers in Genome Research and six papers in Genome Biology.

The JBC thematic review series was organized by Peggy J. Farnham of the University of Southern California. Farnham is also an author on the main integrative paper in Nature, as were seven other JBC authors, including Hardison, Vishwanath R. Iyer, Bum-Kyu Lee, Raymond K. Auerbach, Ghia Euskirchen, Victor X. Jin and Michael Snyder.
